    THE MÉTIERS D'ART

    THE MÉTIERS D'ART

Shown every year in December, the Métiers d'Art collection, proposes since 2002 a Ready-to-Wear collection – outside of the official show schedule – in order to enlighten exceptional savoir-faire and the work of artisans including costume jewelry and button maker Desrues, feathers and flowers maker Lemarié, hat maker Maison Michel, shoe maker Massaro, embroiderers Lesage and Montex, and glove maker Causse.

Every year, Karl Lagerfeld captures the history of Chanel by designating a city that’s linked to the past or present of the House and by making it the theme of his collection. Karl Lagerfeld thus celebrates the virtuosity of the above ateliers and their specialized savoir-faire while revisiting the codes of Chanel.

The artisans skillfully interpret Karl Lagerfeld's sketches season after season with the utmost devotion. "It’s made in an artisan way, in the very best sense of that word, because in artisan there is "art". The art of doing things well. An applied art. And that is truly wonderful. I think the image of this collection is reflected through this finesse which has to be seen up close, almost touched, to understand how it is done and to really appreciate the beauty of this work," Karl Lagerfeld explains.

Chanel is the only House to have dedicated an entirely separate collection to the Métiers d'Art in order to continue its legacy and extraordinary expertise. For more than ten years this collection has been consistently developed and now enjoys its own identity.

Available in boutiques from May onwards, the Métiers d'Art collection, marries modernity with artisanal savoir-faire and offers clients a refined and elegant Ready-to-Wear wardrobe. The accessories – bags, shoes, costume jewelry and even buttons – are the result of the attention paid to every detail.

The cities of Tokyo, New York, Monte-Carlo, London, Moscow, Shanghai, Byzance, Bombay, Edinburgh, Dallas and soon Salzburg, have all served as backdrop to the presentations of the Chanel Métiers d'Art collections.

TEASER OF "REINCARNATION", THE NEW SHORT FILM BY KARL LAGERFELD

TEASER OF "REINCARNATION", THE NEW SHORT FILM BY KARL LAGERFELD

"Reincarnation" is the title of the video clip created and directed by Karl Lagerfeld to accompany the Paris-Salzburg 2014/15 Métiers d'Art collection to be shown on December 2nd, 2014 in Salzburg.

This new short film was the perfect opportunity for Karl Lagerfeld to develop an artistic collaboration with Pharrell Williams, a close friend of the House and personal friend of the designer. In fact, the artist not also composed and wrote the lyrics to "CC The World", the original soundtrack for "Reincarnation", but he also plays one of the lead roles and will be, along with Cara Delevingne, the face of the upcoming campaign of the Paris-Salzburg 2014/15 Métiers d'Art collection.

Karl Lagerfeld directs here the Geraldine Chaplin and Pharrell Williams to imagine a new episode from the life of Gabrielle Chanel. Gabrielle Chanel is holidaying in the suburbs of Salzburg in 1954 when she meets at her hotel a young lift-boy whose jacket would later inspire the iconic Chanel jacket.
"It was time to show the origins of the Chanel jacket, inspired by the one worn by the lift attendant in a hotel near Salzburg in the 1950s (…) "Reincarnation" is the story of a lift attendant’s jacket being reincarnated as a timeless piece of women’s wear," declares Karl Lagerfeld.
"Reincarnation" is also the evocation of another era, that of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which Karl Lagerfeld brings to life for one night in the heart of the 1950s.

Karl Lagerfeld adds: "None of this would have been possible without Pharrell Williams, Cara Delevingne and Geraldine Chaplin. It’s the perfect cast. Pharrell is a genius and Geraldine at her best in the role of Gabrielle Chanel in the year of her comeback."

"Reincarnation" will be screened in Salzburg and on chanel.com on December 1st, 2014 the night before the Paris-Salzburg 2014/15 Métiers d'Art show.

EXHIBITION AGENDA: TRIBUTE TO THE MARCHESA LUISA CASATI IN VENICE

EXHIBITION AGENDA: TRIBUTE TO THE MARCHESA LUISA CASATI IN VENICE

"The Divine Marchesa. Art and Life of Luisa Casati from Belle Epoque to the spree years"

“I want to be a living work of art,” Luisa Casati Stampa once proclaimed. She got her wish throughout her extravagant lifestyle that delighted European society at early 20th century - wearing live snakes as jewellery or light bulb necklaces, dining with wax-mannequin guests, parading with a pair of cheetahs on diamonds leashes. One of the most significant places in the Divine Marchesa’s life, the Palazzo Fortuny in Venice, is hosting the first important exhibition devoted entirely to her. It features more than 100 works between paintings, drawings, jewels, sculptures and photographs on loan from private collections and international museums.

The exhibition reconstructs - through constant cross-referencing - the social and artistic relationships that filled Luisa Casati Stampa’s life. For half a century she was a living legend, a dark lady, a major art collector and patron and muse of the Symbolists, Fauves, Futurists and Surrealists: an astonishing and disturbing personification of modernity and a life of excess who still inspires artists and leading couture houses today, like Chanel.

A sketch by Karl Lagerfeld and a dress from the Cruise collection 2010 are exhibited at the museum.
